Design/Build
The House Limekiln Line is an off-grid 80 m2 house built on a 25 acre rural property in Huron County, Ontario, Canada. I acted as general contractor for the project and lived on site to oversee and construction, much of which was completed by local farmers with side trades. The exterior form and materiality of the house are informed by local agricultural buildings. The house uses passive design strategies, pushing a heavy shoulder against the westerly winter winds, while the more porous north and south facades encourage cross ventilation in the summer.
The house is organized as a monolithic steel clad shell with extended south porch overhang enclosing a vaulted open interior. Careful siting, generous threshold spaces, strategic views into and through the house, and a long deck walk that establishes a datum in the topography encourage stewardship and appreciation of the annually and diurnally shifting landscape beyond.
