Site Installation
Limekiln Grid tracks global wind patterns and shifting topographies on the House on Limekiln Line site. A topographic dip in the site collapses foreground into background, making scale and distance difficult to judge. To better guage the topography, we installed a 25 meter grid of 110 x 3.5 meter high steel poles topped with windsocks across the site.
Slotted into conduit impacted into the ground, the poles were installed and uninstalled several times over the course of the year to accommodate ploughing and harvesting crops on the site. The poles acted as station points for visualising global wind patterns across the site. They also enabled collection of spot elevations from which a topographic map was constructed. The installation revealed that there were multiple topographies at play: the rise and fall of the land, spring and summer crop growth and harvest, and winter snowbanks and drifts.
The House on Limekiln Line responded to this observation by establishing a new fixed datum--a long deck walk situated at the cusp of the topographic dip--as a space for experiencing these many topographies over time.
