Site Planning + Schematic Building Design
This commissioned project consisted in schematic design of a phased site strategy and building designs for a drive shed, primary dwelling, future secondary dwelling, and small screened deck on a severed rural property. I began by identifying key site views and analysing microclimatic conditions through fieldwork and analysis of weather data and corresponding psychrometry.
The simple shed buildings were organised around an inward-facing courtyard with perimeter decking and central wildflower garden. Roof overhangs, shading devices, and window locations were calibrated to enable passive winter heating and summer cooling. The saltbox roof pop-outs focus views on the undulating landscape beyond. To reduce the building’s material carbon footprint, we explored viability of building with three locally sourced natural / regenerative building material systems: timber, earth, and hemp.
